Wilshire Boulevard will be closed on June 23 from 9 am to 4 pm for CicLAvia - a bicycle and pedestrian event open to the public and free of charge ( http://www.ciclavia.org/ ).
Registration is not required and there is no starting or ending point along the route. There will be six miles of car-free, open streets and participants can join at any point along the Wilshire
from Grand Avenue downtown to Fairfax Avenue - open to pedestrians,
strollers, bikes. There will be Hubs with a street fairs on Wilshire
from Curzon to Fairfax and near Wilshire and Western. There will be
crossings at La Brea, Western and Vermont.
The event is coupled with Iconic Wilshire Boulevard, part of Pacific Standard Time Presents: Modern Architecture in L.A.
Initiated by the Getty it will include programs
about the architectural
history of Wilshire Boulevard including radio broadcasts by
architectural commentator Edward Lifson which will be available for
download as free podcasts. The radio series will tell stories that run
quickly through Wilshire’s beginnings as a long path through a barley
field in 1895, through its
pre-WWII boom years to focus on the modern era and new projects.
